Family Meal

A social justice initiative that began as an imperative response to the Black Lives Matter movement in the midst of a pandemic. This experimental meal service explores different food cultures and cuisines, and $10 from every meal sold is donated to charity.

Chosen charities have included community-led organisations fighting systemic racism and inequalities experienced by First Nations people: Change The Record, Deadly Connections, Black Rainbow, NATSILS, ALS NSW ACT, Healing Our Way, Literacy For Life Foundation, Children's Ground, First Peoples Disability Network, Just Reinvest NSW and Seed Mob. Other recipients have been organisations responding to present day natural and social disasters, such as Lebanese Food Bank in the aftermath of the Beirut port explosions in August 2020, Californian bushfire relief efforts via California Family Farmer Emergency Fund and the Djap Warrung heritage protection embassy in its efforts to protect the sacred Indigenous birthing trees in Victoria.

In April 2021, Family Meal was held at Cafe Freda's with an Indian-inspired menu that raised over $2000 fo India COVID relief efforts, thanks to the group effort of the Freda's team. More recently, Family Meal explored Yoshoku food of Japan. $500 was donated to CORE Community Services to assist those in South West Sydney most heavily impacted by the latest Covid lockdown.

Started in response to COVID and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, this weekly meal service saw $10 from each meal sold going to a different First Nations charity each week. Recipient charities have included: [Insert with links].

The most recent iteration was held at Cafe Freda's in July 2021, with an Indian inspired menu of flatbread, curries, chutneys, rice and ladoo. Over $2000 was donated to India COVID relief efforts.
